of conglutinin and immunoconglutinins are provided by the late D. G. Ingram. Characterization of these serum factors (conglutinins of normal bovine serum and immunoconglutinin antibodies produced in many mammal ian species following antigen stimulation) that interact with adsorbed complement components, their role in immune reactions and their use as serological tools are competently dealt with. L. N. Ruben comprehensively reviews the variety of in vwo and in vitro immunological studies being performed on amphibians and clearly illustrates the value of this vertebrate class, particularly the tailless anurans, in the study of basic characteristics of immune responses. This putative overview of animal models contains no chapter on avian immunology surprisingly, since the chicken and the quail have offered invaluable and unique insight into the origins and differentiation of T and B lymphocytes. The invertebrates are ignored altogether, al though several backboneless phyla are helpful in exploring the evolution of the cells and molecules involved in vertebrate immunity. These are d i sappoin t ing omissions in a book that otherwise will have interest and considerable value for many immunobiologists.

Background: Thalassemia is the most common hereditary anemia and beta thalassemia major is its most severe form. Endocrine abnormalities in thalassemia major are common disturbing complications that need prompt management. The purpose of this study was to determine the endocrine disorders and bone mineral density in patients with major -thalassemia in Qazvin, Iran. Methods: In this cross- sect...
متن کاملReciprocal Association between Thyroid Function and Metabolic Syndrome: A Review Article
Introduction: Thyroid dysfunction can impair fat and glucose metabolism, blood pressure, and body weight. On the other hand, metabolic syndrome (MetS) can be associated with an increased risk of hypothyroidism. Due to the high prevalence of both disorders and the possibility of synergistic metabolic detrimental consequences in combination, this review study aimed to investigate the reciprocal a...
متن کاملChanges in Impaired Fasting Glucose among Tehranian adolescents through a decade of follow up: Tehran Lipid and Glucoes Study
Introduction: The prevalence of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) is increasing worldwide, affecting people in all age groups, including adolescents. The objective of this study was to explore changes in IFG prevalence during a decade long follow-up in adolescent participants of a population-based cohort study from Iran. Materials and Methods: We included 2998 participants, aged 11-19 in study per...
متن کاملAnalysis of Censored Survival Data with Dimension Reduction Methods: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. To specify an appropriate model to determine the risk of CVD and predict survival rate, users are required to specify a functional form which relates the outcome variables to the input ones. In this paper, we proposed a dimension reduction method using a general model, which includes many widely used survival m...
متن کاملThe Effect of Consumption of Unhealthy Snacks on Diet and the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome in Adults: Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study, Iran
Background & Aims: Unhealthy snacks contain high amounts of calories, simple sugars, fat, cholesterol, salt, additives, and conservatives. Increased consumption of these unhealthy snacks is one of the underlying factors for the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and metabolic disorders. In this study, we investigated the effects of unhealthy snacks on diet and the risk of metabolic syndrome aft...
متن کاملHigh Blood Pressure, FBS and LDL-C among Diabetic Iranians
Introduction: Control of blood pressure, fasting plasma sugar (FPS) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) reduces to vascular complications of diabetes. In this study we determined the prevalence of diabetic individuals with uncontrolled blood pressure, FPS and LDL-C. Materials and Methods: We used data from three national Surveys of Risk Factors of Non-Communicable Disease (SuRFNCD) ...
